GES students get fired up for annual Math-a-thon
It’s Math-a-thon time of the year! Granville Elementary School students recently gathered in an assembly to learn how they can sharpen their math skills and help very sick children. GES is no stranger to this program. Students and teachers have been involved since 2002 and have raised a total of $78,977.66. That’s a very impressive total! This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Math-a-thon program and over 28,000 schools across the country are participating.
This program is sponsored by St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee and was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas. In 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, was 4%. Thanks to research and treatment protocols developed over the last 50 years at St. Jude's, today the survival rate for this once deadly disease is 96%. You can visit www.mathathon.org to learn more about St. Jude’s.
For the next two weeks, students will be asking family and friends to sponsor them for this important project. Parents might consider asking co-workers to contribute. Once students have the Math-a-thon books, they should work to complete the math problems. Families can also participate on-line. Books should be finished by February, 26, 2019. The next step involves students collecting their donations from sponsors and bringing them to school or submitting on-line. Be sure to communicate with the coordinator so your child receives the proper prizes. All donations are due February 28, 2019. Money can be turned in as soon as it is completely collected from the sponsors. Prizes will be ordered and totals will be announced! We are hoping to “sweeten the pot” with an ice cream celebration…stay tuned!
Checks should be made payable to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or you can send cash. I offer a special thanks to our local Six Flags Park in Lake George for offering tickets for those donations over $50 and Stewart’s is sweetening the “pot” by providing an ice cream party to the participants at the completion of this event.
Everyone is invited to participate. For questions, please call Coordinator and AIS math teacher, Alicia Marcy @ 642-9357 Ext. 3138, or email email@example.com.
