MJT Students Shine Bright at Granville Tree Lighting and Parade

Mary J. Tanner Primary School students played a big part in Granville’s Christmas celebration this year. They rode on parade floats, helped light the Christmas tree, and played drums as part of the event theme, “Drummin’ up the Magic in Veteran’s Park.”

Eight students were chosen to participate by their teachers. Teachers selected students who had recently been helpful or shown exceptional effort or kindness.

A highlight of the night was seeing Santa and Mrs. Claus, who brought a festive spirit to the event.

“My favorite part was asking Santa for what I wanted,” said Emiliyah, who is in second grade. Maddison, a first-grader, also loved seeing Santa, “My favorite part was when I got the present from Santa. I felt special,” she said.

The Grinch also made an appearance “stealing” gifts while making his way down Main Street. But second-graders Ava and Conor made it their mission to find the presents. “The best part was when the Grinch tried to take all of the presents, and Conor and I stopped him,” said Ava.

According to MJT Principal Breanne Taylor, participating in community activities is important for students as it fosters social skills, civic awareness, and a sense of responsibility.

“By actively participating in community celebrations, our students not only have fun but learn the value of being contributors to the shaping of their communities,” said Principal Taylor.

The event was also great for students and families to spend time together.

“Besides the benefits of being able to drum along with the Little Drummer Boy and get one of the golden tickets to be first in line to see Santa, our students were able to spend time with their families and feel special, which is what Granville and the season is all about. The tree lighting gives the entire community the magic of unity and family. Having our MJT students participate will make memories they will cherish forever,” said First Grade Teacher Mrs. Picard.
