peer mentoring at granville csd.org over a blurred image of the granville jr/sr high

Breakfast is served and so is the spirit of mentoring! On Tuesday, January 6th, volunteer mentors in the junior and senior class were matched with 7th and 8th grade students at the new Granville Jr/Sr High Mentoring Kick-Off Breakfast.

Over 30 students played get-acquainted games, met their mentors and enjoyed getting to know each other over pancakes, sausage and Battenkill Creamery chocolate milk - a local favorite.

The juniors and seniors who volunteered are students who are doing well in academics and extracurriculars and have encouragement to offer their peers. Middle school students were selected to participate by the 7th and 8th grade team and the Junior High Guidance department headed by School Counselor, Elizabeth Mulvaney.

Mrs Mulvaney in her office seated in a chair“It’s a win-win for the mentor and mentee when students build connections in school. Our older students experience giving back to their fellow students, and offer encouragement for the middle school years. Younger students receive a boost of inspiration and fresh ideas for handling common challenges when entering a new school or trying to find their place in the middle grades. Every bit of connection helps and can make all the difference to a 7th or 8th grader,” shared Mrs. Mulvaney, pictured left.

Mentor-students will meet with their mentees approximately once per week to lend a listening ear or word of advice and offer light homework help.  Mrs. Mulvaney will be available twice per month for afterschool check-ins, in addition to anytime during the regular school day.

“When I’ve done this before on a smaller scale, it really seemed to make a difference in the 7th and 8th graders lives,” said Mrs. Mulvaney. “And there’s nothing like seeing a friendly face in the hallways or at lunch.” Students were matched up by interests, availability and goals and each mentoring partnership set a date for their next meet-up by the end of the breakfast meeting.

There are up to three more juniors and seniors who have openings for a mentee. Please contact emulvaney@granvillecsd.org if you would like to have your 7th or 8th grader considered for student mentoring.

Thank you to Mrs. Mulvaney and our volunteer team of juniors and seniors for going above and beyond at Granville Jr/Sr High!
