Leos Club is seeking help from the community for recycling projects.
Introducing the Leo Club
The Leo Club is a new club at Granville Jr/Sr High focused on civic engagement in the Granville Community. The club is part of the Lions Club International network and partners with the Granville Lions Club for getting local projects done. Students engage in community service, develop leadership skills, build local connections and create new friendships based in meaningful contribution. The Leo Club is a great way to start connecting with an international organization, with global opportunities, right here in Granville.
NexTrex Plastic Recycling Challenge
The club is participating in the NexTrex challenge and has collected almost 600 pounds of plastic bags/film toward their 1,000 pounds in one year goal. Once the goal is reached, the club will receive a Trex bench which will be placed in a community location.
This project helps keep this plastic out of landfills and allows it to be recycled into decking. Any plastic bags/film that will stretch when pulled can be used. The plastic must be clean and dry. This includes pallet wrap, wood pellet bags, food storage bags, product overwrap, and plastic mailers.
See NexTrex.com for what can and can't be recycled.
Collection bins are located at the Jr./Sr. High School front office, Village of Granville Municipal Building, and Eco Cents Bottle Redemption Center.
Recycling of Specific Household Items
Leos Club is also looking for donations of used eyeglasses, used hearing aids, prescription pill bottles with labels removed, and pull-tabs from beverage cans. The eyeglasses and hearing aids will be refurbished and given to people in need. The pill bottles will be used to distribute medications to people in third world countries. Lastly, the pull-tabs will be recycled to help fund transportation for children to Shriners Hospitals. Collection bins for these items are located at the school front office or Mr. Houston's art room at the Jr/Sr High.
New Club Members Welcome
Leos club is also seeking to expand student membership. Mr. Houston is the faculty advisor, and Ms. Unkauf, Granville Lions Club member, is a parent advisor. The club meets on the first and last Monday of each month, at 2:20 in Mr. Houston's art room.
